Kill List Essay (sorry its late i completely forgot to upload it)

What impact does media ownership have upon the range of products available to audiences in the media area you have studied?

Mad Max: Fury Roads budget was $150,000,000 and it made, $153,629,485 back from it. Village Road show Pictures is a leading Australian co-producer and co-financier of major Hollywood motion pictures, having released over 85 films since its establishment in 1986 including, The Great Gatsby, The Matrix Trilogy, The Sherlock Holmes franchise, I Am Legend, the Ocean’s series, The Happy Feet franchise, Mystic River, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Get Smart, Sex and the City 2, Gran Torino, The Lego Movie and American Sniper. Mad Max: Fury Road was produced by village roadshow pictures, this is one of the reasons why the movie did so well in the box office, because the village roadshow pictures have previously produced box office hits and have gained a reputation to do so. Another production company is ratpac- dune entertainment, which is an American motion picture financing company formed in a merger by producer-director Brett Ratner, his partner billionaire James Packer, and ratpac-Dune Entertainment's Steven Mnuchin, which provides funds to a number of Warner Bros. films. Ratpac-dune entertainment also have a reputation to produce amazing films, for example, The Hills Have Eyes, X-men, Avatar, Alvin And The Chipmunks, Diary Of A Whimpy Kid etc…The main distributer of Mad Max: Fury Road was Warner Bros,  it is an American entertainment company that produces film, television and music entertainment.

Ex Machinas budget was $15,000,000 and it made $25,440,971 back from it.DNA Films has been one of the most successful production companies that is located in the United Kingdom it has produced films like Ex Machina and 28 Days Later which have both been quite successful. Another production company which produced Ex Machina is Film 4, it is a British film production company owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The company has been responsible for backing a large number of films made in the United Kingdom.  Film 4 have produced films like, Shaun of the dead, this is England and walk about. All of these film have been a success. Another production company which produced Ex Machina is Scott Rudin, Scott Rudin is an American film producer and a theatrical producer. He has produced films like, The Social Network, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Grand Budapest Hotel and many more successful movies. The main distribution company for Ex Machina is Universal Studios. Universal studios have made hundreds of extremely successful movies, one being Ex Machina, some more are, Jurassic World, Jurassic Park, Fast and Furious Series, Jaws and The Mummy.

The budget for Kill List was £500,000, it only made £26,297 back. Warp X was founded in 2005 and produces feature films like, Hush, Donkey Punch and of course Kill List. It is a digital film studio that produces feature films in the UK with budgets usually between £400,000 and £800,000. Another production company which produced Kill List is Film 4, it is a British film production company owned by Channel Four Television Corporation. The company has been responsible for backing a large number of films made in the United Kingdom.  Film 4 have produced films like, Shaun of the dead, this is England and walk about. All of these films have been a success. The fact that kill list is also produced by film four could lead us to believe that film four is not consistent is producing successful films as kill list didn’t make and profit what so ever, in fact it barely made a quarter of its money back. If this film had been created through media ownership that is worth a lot more money, then it would be possible that it would  have been more of a success. I think this because, with a larger initial budget they would have attracted bigger stars, famous directors, better effects and the film would target a larger audience.  Lower budget films are much less likely to be produced in Ultra HD or 3D.

EASTENDERS DISABILITY REPRESENTATION (DONNA)

EASTENDERS DISABILITY REPRESENTATION (DONNA)

Donna has a physical disability resulting in her having to use a wheelchair occasionally to get from A to B. During the scene when Fat boy comes to take her on a date, through a high angle shot, we see that she is getting ready and see that she is dressed up looking very feminine. She wears a short, red, lacy dress that shows off a lot of skin including her chest and cleavage, arms and her lower legs this shows femininity, the colour red can also show lots of different emotions, for example, it could suggest love, anger, fierceness or danger. Donna goes away from the stereotype of non-sexual because she is wearing quite sexualised clothes. She also got ready by herself which shows independence because she didn't need any assistance, showing that the character is rebelling against the stereotype of being a burden. The character of Donna shows that she is a counter type because she is seen to subvert stereotypes of disabled people and show her independence and how she is different to other people.
During the scene, Donna falls over and Fat boy comes to help her. At this point they are both at he same level (fats was kneeling down and Donna had fallen) and the camera shows an equal mid shot. This shows that their is no dominant person and they are both the same. Soon after, Fats stands up and leaves Donna on the floor, which then changes the camera to a shot reverse shot due to their different levels. When the camera moves from person to person, the camera, when facing Fats, is at a low angle showing him to be higher up than Donna, and showing his dominance and power against her. When the camera points at Donna, it is from a high angle presenting her to be weak and powerless similar to a stereotype of disabled people.
An example of sound during the scene is the diegetic music in the background. The radio is playing an upbeat, lively song whilst Donna gets ready for their date. The music makes the scene seem more realistic and it also attempts to cut out the awkwardness between them both when there is silence. When the characters are talking, Donna shouts at Fats to leave and he does so. Although the camera is pointing down at her, she regains her power by ordering the male character to leave. Due to her disability, it is often thought that disabled people have no power because they are restricted, but Donna goes against this making her character a counter type.

LUTHER GENDER REPRESENTATION

LUTHER- GENDER REPRESENTATION
Camera Work: The start of the short clip of Luther begins with an over-the-shoulder shot, this suggests that he is looking down on the woman, which give the impression that the male gender is more powerful than the female gender. This also gives us the impression that he is the more dominant character. As they enter the woman’s apartment, the man is looked at from an over-the-shoulder shot from behind the woman. However, the eye level is even which could tell us that she sees herself as of equal authority and dominance to him. Near the end of the clip, we are shown a close up of the woman, this shows emotion to tell the audience how she feels without actually saying it.
Editing: During the over-the-shoulder shot looking at the male character, the area of the woman that was still visible was blurred out. This could suggest to us that he is the main focus at this point in time and could also convey his dominance. During the close up shot of the woman near the end, everything in the background is blurred out. This shows us that she is the main focus and that in that moment, she is more dominant. As I was suggesting before, the extreme close up can show emotion to the audience.
Mise En Scene: The woman’s makeup is quite prominent and sharp and almost sexual. The deep, dark red of the lipstick could represent a level of dominance or power that the character has. This level of dominance is also accentuated through her dark suit and sharp facial expression. The close proximity between the two characters when they are in her apartment could portray a level of intimacy being initiated by the female character towards the male character. The colours of the male characters suit are lighter than the woman’s, This could show that he has a higher level of dominance than she does.

Sound: Sound is used throughout TV drama and films to create tension, suggest what is happening or simply just as conversation. There is diegetic sound and non diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is sound that can be heard naturally and by the characters, for example conversation or the sound of traffic. Non dietetic sound is sound that is edited into the piece that the characters won't be able to hear, this could be music to create tension or narration.
Sound is used effectively throughout the clip. As the female announces her cat is now ashes and shows off the vase, there is a sudden noise, a sound of dread perhaps. This wouldn't have been heard by the characters but heard by the audience to create a sense of shock.
As the scene moves on the female begins to describe a black hole. As the explanation continues eerie music begins to play in the background as if to suggest the black hole is significant, even if that is unknown to the male character. This will create a sense of mystery to the audience about what relevance it may have.

Alex Garland

Ex Machina is a 2015 British science fiction thriller film written and directed by Alex Garland. The foundation for Ex Machina was laid when Garland was 11 or 12 years old, after he had done some basic coding and experimentation on a computer his parents had bought him and which he sometimes felt had a mind of its own. His later ideas came from years of discussions he had been having with a friend with an expertise in neuroscience, who claimed machines could never become sentient. Trying to find an answer on his own, he started reading relevant books about the topic.

why did Ex Machina do so well in the box office?

Firstly, the genre of the Ex Machina and the release date of the movie. As this movie is a Sci-Fi/Drama/Mystery/Romance type of film, it engages an array of audiences, which will increase the number of viewers the movie gets. This is a dominant factor from the offset in a film in being able to triumph at the box office. Naturally, Sci-Fi movies do well at the box office because they are particular and different to any other movie. The rating for Ex Machina is R in the United States,  (equivalent to an 18 in the United Kingdom). This means that it isn’t a four quadrant film, it does not appeal to all audiences, it may be inappropriate for younger audiences, which will drop the amount of views the movie will get by a substantial amount. The film also involves a large amount of intelligence which will intrigue people with ambitions within their choices of career.

Secondly the actors in Ex Machina may have also contributed to the triumph at the box office. there were only three main characters in this movie that are not that well known and have not featured in many major films. however, the actors who play Caleb and Nathan in the movie are both going to be in the new upcoming star wars movie which is most likely going to be an absolutely huge box office hit. this could be a huge reason why the movie succeeded in the box office. Domhnall Gleeson (Caleb) who has starred in About Time, Unbroken and Never Let Me Go. Oscar Isaac (Nathen) known for Inside Llewyn Davis and Drive. Alicia Vikander who has starred in The Man for U.N.C.L.E and Seventh Son. The producers Andrew MacDonald and Allon Reich have worked together for many films including Dredd, 28 weeks later and Sunshine on Leith. In pre –production the director and screen writer Alex Garaland has also worked with the producers on the films like Dredd. Alex Garaland is not very well known, some of the films he has worked with are 28 Days Later and Never Let Me Go.

in conclusion, i believe as well as many others, that Ex Machina is an absolutely brilliant movie and deserved to be in the box office. to say that the creators budget was only $15000000, they earned $38000000 afterwards, which is absolutely outstanding for a low budget British film.
